Just be sure to eat early enough so that both the food and the bolus insulin will be out of your system by the time your basal testing period starts. Also eat a breakfast for which you know the exact amount to bolus so that you start the basal period at a reasonable BG level (between 100 and 150, say). You don't want to have to correct with either insulin or food if possible because you want to see how your BG drifts from the beginning of the basal testing period to the end without any interference from food or bolus insulin.
