Great job
My story is very similar, I was dx with a1c of 13.1 and in 4 months got it down to 5.4. I hope I'll manage to keep it low when the honeymoon is over.

HA1C aka HbA1C aka A1C represent the average of bg level for the past 3 months. For example an a1c of 7% roughly represent an average bg level of 170. Generally the lower it is the better. As the a1c goes higher so does the probability of developing diabetes complications in the future. The ADA recomends keeping it below 7 but many argue that it should be lower or that it's perfectly fine to go higher. I'm sure you'll hear a lot more about it in the future.
