When I got mine, I 'shadowed' my MDI. I entered by BG reading and compared its bolus to what I figured. Before I went to training, I reset it back to factory defaults so I didn't mess with the 'real' programming. I waited about a week between when it arrived and when we started. I had a friend with the same pump, so he helped me with lots of questions.
