I had a similar experience with my younger brother who died at 32 from cancer because he wouldn't take responsibility for doing what everyone (doctors, family etc) told him needed to be done. He knew at least 2 years earlier what he should do. He just refused to follow the diet, medication etc prescribed. He could have either beat it or lived much longer if he had tried. As normally happens, he left a wide trail of destruction for those left behind.
When people ask, I say he died from a bad attitude.
