Smart little boy!  My granddaughter was taught what to do since she was small. The first time she did anything at all, was when she was last year when she was 10. We were shopping and I needed to sit down, and she said I was talking "funny". She bought a Pepsi and insisted I drink some. Got just enough to realize I was low and to have her buy us some lunch. Now I have to be careful to watch for lows, someone is always trying to stuff some candy in my mouth.
