Without taking insulin, it's like you're feeding your baby a boatload of sugar. This could cause the baby's pancreas to have to work harder - taxing his/her pancreas. It's best to keep your sugars under control with the insulin.

Congrats on the baby! I'm also pregnant - 36 weeks now. I've been on insulin since just prior to our "conception". So far so good for the baby - she's normal size for gestation - a bit small if anything. That means no cesarean section!
