I always keep some basal running while riding. About 50% works for me. I do carry a "picnic basket" as my wife calls it with me and I have used it many times. I agree with the above if I eat and cycle within the hour I will reduce my carbs by 50% of what I ate. For 20 to 30 mile rides this works for me. Anything longer and I test about every 1/2 hour and adjust accordingly.
I also have my BS rise if I do not excercise for a few days. I just feel bad and can't wait to go back to a regular routine and get things back in line. My wife and I did the Tour de Cure last year and rode the 50 miles and had a great time. I did not have the pump at that time.
