I too am the only person in my family to be discovered with type 1 D. Surprised the heck out of me! At first I was sure someone made a mistake because there is no family history, but alas, I have accepted the unfortunate reality of "luck". If there is a genetic component to this is was not expressed for as far back as my family could check out. Just lucky, I guess.... Can you get genes predisposing you for type 2 and end up with type 1?
