Hi There Ultra: Cool name.

Welcome to
the Forums.
I could be mistaken but the first condition
that crossed my mind was Sleep Apnea.
Many People have that condition nowadays
and anyone can get it. Diabetes doesn't
help any. Being over-weight and/or a smoker
can also be the cause. So losing weight/quitting
smoking will help alot.
If you have some of these symptoms you
should tell your Dr. and hopefully he will
be able to get you into a Sleep Disorder Clinic.
They will test you(over night)and suggest the
treatment for you.
I know what you mean. I quit smoking 2+ yrs.
ago and I can actually get through a 2 weeks
without gasping for air.
Welcome and Good Luck.
Sleep Apnea-Symptoms
p.s. It could also be a panic/anxiety attack.
Just google: panic anxiety attack symptoms
That should get you there.
