As a general rule, what helps is very rarely what you say, but instead, simply being there for that person. Help them when they need a hand, give them a shoulder to cry on if they need it, and always remind them that you're their friend.

All of that is far more important than saying the right thing (and too often, when you try to say the right thing, you end up saying the wrong one)
