Be there. She'll likely get some rather intense laser. It's not that painful, but it is very hard work. Surgery is also a possibility. The technology is very good and you can tell her that many of us have experienced this and come through it very well.

Your biggest role could be helping her regain or maintain control of her sugar levels. She needs to have an A1C below 6%. It's doable by everyone with the right information. Lots of temptations at school. Help her stay the course, but don't be a food nazi. It's a tough role. Information is power.

You are not immune. You and or someone you love will surely be touched too at some time. Your experiences can help others too down the road.
