Need help

I may start a slow acting insulin.. Which should i try?, I work shift work - when should i take it, how does it work? Will I experience lows? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

A1C: 6.9 (03/08/2008) 8 units of Lantus
A1c: 6.1 (6/17/2008) 12u lantus, 4u humalog w/ meals
A1C: 5.5 (10/15/2008)
Meds: 12 units of Lantus, 3-5 units of humalog with meals since 3/11/2008.
