I assume that by "normal thyroid test" you mean total TSH. It usually shows up a problem, but not always. The process works something like this.
T3 is the active hormone that regulates metabolic rate, and it's level is critical. The pituitary gland produces Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), which causes the thyroid to produce T4. And T4 is converted to T3 in the liver. So it is possible that TSH is normal but T3 is out of whack.
