| This incident and the ensuing discussion remind me of an apropos joke. Hopefully it's not taken in an offensive context, but rather as a parable...
A large flood was coming, and many people were evacuating town. One man showed no interest in leaving.
"I'm not worried," he said, "G-d will take care of me."
One of the neighbors saw the man, just sitting contentedly on the front porch.
"Hop in!" called the neighbor. "We'll give you a ride!"
The man just shook his head, declining the offer. "G-d will take care of me!"
Sure enough, the flood came. As the waters rose higher, the man sought refuge on his top floor. As he looked out the window, yet another evacuee was passing by on a boat.
"I'll come get you!" hollered the boater.
The stubborn man shook his head, replying, "Thanks, but G-d will take care of me!"
The flood waters continued to rise. At this point, the man had been forced to climb to the top of his roof. A search-and-rescue helicopter flying overhead spotted him, and sent down a rescuer with a basket.
The man declined to be hoisted up: "No... no... G-d will take care of me."
The waters got higher, and the man was swept away, drowning in the process.
When he reached the afterlife, he was stunned. He asked G-d, "Why didn't you take care of me?"
To this G-d replied, "I sent you a truck, a boat, and even a helicopter... what were you waiting for?!"
