Scarlett, I am sorry about your increased A1C. It can be so frustrating. Mine also went up (the last time I had one done) and I was bummed. I think you are right to try to avoid the anti-depressants. Spring and Summer have a way of making life look much better. Hopefully, with the added gardening and the desire to bike ride or walk your dog, your A1C and mood will improve.
