Bad Pens

I just began using solarstar pens for my lantus and humalog. I was wondering if any of you have had experience with bad pens and how to determine if they are bad. The only way I can determine is when I go to use the insulin and my sugar does not ever come down. Is there an earlier indicator?

A1C: 6.9 (12/15/2007) Diet & exercise
A1C: 6.9 (03/08/2008) 8 units of Lantus
A1c: 6.1 (6/17/2008) 12u lantus, 4u humalog w/ meals
Meds: 12 units of Lantus, 3-5 units of humalog with meals since 3/11/2008.
