My story

Here is a short story i just finished writing about my life with type 1 diabetes I hope everyone enjoys!!

I wrote a little story on My life with type one diabetes. I hope everyone enjoys!!

My life with Type 1 Diabetes

My name is Molly, and I was diagnosed with type 1, diabetes when I was 23 months old. It started off when I was 18 months old after I got my shots, I wasn’t playing, I wasn’t talking, all I would do is sleep wherever I was at I would just fall asleep. My mom took me to the doctor and he said nothing was wrong with me that I was just going through a stage. On December 27th, 1994 I was sleeping on the couch, I was lethargic and my face was turning colors my mom called the doctor the doctor was out of town and their was another doctor on call, he told my mom it was just the flu and to give me Gatorade to keep me hydrated. My mom wasn’t buying it so she took me in, the doctor took my diaper off stuck a pee strip in my diaper and told my parents to take me to the Childrens hospital in Dallas TX. They ran a bunch of tests and diagnosed me with diabetes that day.
I never really knew that I was different than other kids; I thought everybody had diabetes and it was normal for a kid to be stuck with needles. I started to realize that not every one had diabetes when I went to kindergarten, I was fine with it until I hit 2nd grade. One day in 2nd grade it was a kids birthday so the kids mom brought cupcakes and cookies to school, I asked my teacher if I could go to the nurse to test so I could have one, the teacher said no and to go sit down at my desk that I wasn’t allowed to eat it. Later that day I got home off the bus I went to my mom and I broke down crying my eyes out. My mom went up to the school the next day and pulled me out and home schooled me.
I was home schooled till the last half of fifth grade and the first half of sixth grade. In sixth grade I made all A’s in every class, My nurse didn’t really know what she was doing, If I had a low at school she would tell my mom to come get me, and pull me out of school for the rest of the day. I missed a lot of days because of that nurse. One day my principal called up and said that they were going to fail me because I missed so much school. When my mom told me this I was very upset I told my mom it wasn’t my fault, and I worked really hard to make straight A's. My mom told the principal it was because of my diabetes and he said that’s no excuse. So after that semester was up my mom went and pulled me out and I have been home schooled ever since.
From the age of 2 to about the age of 12, my mom would always wake up in the middle of the night if I were low; She would just all the sudden jump out of bed and knew I was low. One day I was at a sleep over with my Sunday school class at my Sunday school teacher’s house, my mom all the sudden jumped out of bed woke my dad up and said that I was low and she was going to where I was staying, My dad of course thought my mom was out of her mind, When they got to where I was staying my mom literally beat down the door trying to get to me, sure enough my sugar was 62 my mom was so relieved and my dad was shocked. Ever since the age 12 I wake up on my own when I’m low and my mom can sleep peacefully.
We didn’t know until 3 years ago that we were suppose to be counting carbohydrates instead of sugars so my blood sugars were always out of control. I was in the hospital at least twice a year with an IV in me because of I was always getting strep throat and would refuse to drink. One time when I was 3 I had strep throat and I had to go to the hospital they did everything they could to hold me down to stick IV in me I wouldn’t let them so they had to put me in a straight jacket. I didn’t want to get an IV in me so I came out of the straight jacket; I was the first three year old to come out of a straight jacket in that hospital. . For the First time in years my doctor was able to right ‘diabetes under control’, and ever since I got my pump I haven’t been back to the hospital.
I did nothing to get diabetes. I still can do what other kids can do. I have a normal life. I play volleyball, ride dirtbikes, and love to go shopping like any other teenage girl!! Diabetes is apart of my life but I don’t let it keep me down, it may slow me down but I don’t let it keep from having a normal life.
