The article said they found lots and lots of sharps. maybe they thought the flex pen made a better photo?

I never know whether to put empty / out of date insulin pens/cartridges/ bottles in the trash or in the sharps bin. they're not sharp, but i'd be freaked if I was a sanitation worker who found one.
