For every hour my pump is not delivering, I find my bg about doubles. In 3-4 hours this could easily mean a "HI" on my meter. Your willingness to go without insulin a few hours would be very different if you had type 1, I would hope.

That being said, I would absolutely hope people on a traditional pump are carrying their current vial with them as well. It's saved my butt a few times.
