I have never had it, but I've heard that a c-peptide test can help determine type 1 vs type 2.

Low levels of c-peptide track the low levels of insulin produced by type 1's. Insulin resistance, or type 2, results in higher insulin production and more c-peptide.

Certainly I'd ask about this & see if the endo thinks its necessary.
