Patricia, actually I see it differently... because you are only on oral meds there is not much you can do in the middle of the afternoon for example, if you find your sugars are high.. so really not too much point in you testing unless you are logging your daily patterns.. on the other hand, someone taking insulin can test... see they are high and give a correction bolus

You need to shake the idea that being on insulin and testing is a last resort type thing, or a real chore... it really is something more type 2 should be on much sooner as you can get much better control.
