I am surprised to see that, as a T1, you are using Januvia. It reduces post prandial blood glucose by stimulating insulin production by the beta cells after eating. But T1s generally don't have any beta cells. It would only do you some good if you have a significant amount of residual beta cell function. But even then, I would have thought that basal/bolus insulin treatment would be the way to go.

Metformin, on the other hand, can be used successfully in conjunction with insulin treatment. But because it inhibits the supply of hepatic glucose, you need to be more mindful of hypos. Metformin reduces the abilty of the liver to come to your rescue.
