| Welcome Lana! You've found a great source for information. You'll probably learn much more here than from your doc...I know I did.
I'd encourage you to test your blood sugar..OFTEN! If you test 2 hrs after your first bite of food, you'll learn how various foods affect your blood sugars and be able to make smarter food choices. When first diagnosed, I kept a journal writing down EVERY BITE I put in my mouth, and the corresponding 2 hr blood sugar reading. Before very long, I had several "safe" options I knew I could eat w/o having high blood sugars.
Many of us find that avoiding carbs such as breads, rice, potatoes and pasta (white foods) help keep our blood sugars stable. Also, regular exercise is VERY important...you won't believe the difference it makes.
There's a great book we often recommend for new T2s..."The First Year, Type 2 Diabetes," by Gretchen Becker...she's a diabetic herself, and its an easy and informative read.
Ask lots of questions, look through the old T2 posts and you'll learn a lot.
