| When first diagnosed, I started metformin 500 mg twice a day. I asked the doc to switch me to the metformin ER, as i'd read it kept numbers more stable throughout the day, as the extended release caused it to peak later than with regular metformin. I had equally good results with both.
If someone is having a lot of the "gastric" problems with regular metformin, it might be worth it to consider the extended release. I did find the extended release pills to be bigger than the regular ones, but it wasn't a problem for me.

11/06: 6.2.
03/07: 5.3
06/07: 5.4
10/07: 5.3
05/08: 6.2 (after dealing with shingles & bronchiti)
