| I was initally dx'ed as type 2, put on oral meds, no tests done at all. Almost two years later, three doctors later, having lost 65 lbs and being sick as a dog, my insurance required me to go to a new doctor. He took one look at me and said he thought the problem was that I was type 1. He did the GAD antibodies and a c-peptide and I failed them both, for lack of better explanation. Been on insulin ever since.
There was no progression to type 1. I was never type 2. It was a mis-dagnosis because of my age (32 at the time), family history (no type 1's plenty of type 2's) and size (I was overweight).
I personally think the tests should be mandatory. Too many people who are actually type 1 (or 1.5, if you prefer) are slipping through the cracks, living with high bg's and all of the nasty symptoms that go along with it, not to mention complications that could be setting in.
In my humble opinion, any doctor who is not willing to do the tests isn't worth the paper his degree is printed on.
