| Hi: I too am lactose intolerant. The lactose free milk just has no sugar in the form of lactose, it still has sugar. In fact, 30 years ago when I was diagnosed as lactase deficient, I was given a Lactose Tolerance test that was very like the Glucose Tolerance test. The only difference was that no rise in blood sugar was a bad thing because it meant that all that sugar was headed for the intestine to eventually cause Metformin-ike symptoms. I think they have a much quicker way of diagnosis now involving the gases found in the breath you exhale??
Often an enzyme is added to milk to break the lactose down into digestible sugars. That enzyme is what is found in Lactaid or Lacteze pills.
I also use unsweetend Almond Breeze. It is the best low carb milk sub I have found. Before dx, I used Rice Dream but as you can tell from the name, It is much higher in carbs. In my smoothies I add a small amount of cream and I find the result is delicious. Almond Breeze is very low in fat.
