| When a first degree family member (mother, father, brother, sister, children) has type 2 diabetes, your chance of getting it is about 40%. To that, you can add or subtract based on other risk factors. Genetics is a big risk in the development of type 2, but certainly no the only one.
In comparison, a first degree family member with type 1 gives you about a 3 to 8 % chance of developing type 1 also (depending on which family member).
