You really need to use as much insulin as it takes to control your blood sugar. The amount of insulin you need to use depends on on a number of the things, but the amount of carbs you eat is the big controllable variable. So the question should be, "to what extent should I limit carbs to avoid gaining weight?". You will have to experiment until you find what works for you. Good luck .. .
