I've gotten most of my meters in the past for free. the only one we paid for, was this huge one that I put on my arm, called Soft-touch or something..but it kept breaking so we got our $300 back. But all you have to do, atleast what we do, is go to the Diabetic Team at the hospital when I have to do my check-up with them..and they usually give us a bunch of supplies if my mom can't afford them, and once in a while they give us a meter that the company is trying to promote.
