The sugars should be included in the total carbs but that's not the whole story. Sugars are the simplest of carbs and react the quickest to raise blood sugar. If you are pumping and using dual wave to bolus, the more sugar in an item, the more insulin you want up front. Conversely, the more complex a carbohydrate, the longer it takes to break down and the longer it will take to turn into blood sugar. For instance, brown rice is better than white, whole grain is better than plain white bread.
