This is a topic not too far from my mind at all times!
My son is severely allergic to all nuts. Really, I shouldn't even keep them in the house, but truth be told, I eat them when he goes to sleep. I abstained from them for a while when we first found out he had the allergy, but, boy is it hard not to eat nuts when you've already cut out all the other stuff.
I, too, think it's autoimmune weirdness! I actually talked to our allergy dr last week and he said that my diabetes has nothing to do with my son's allergy...not sure why, but I think it does.
Until proven otherwise, I guess it's all a matter of opinion.
