I did the same thing when diagnosed--cut out candy completely and drastically scaled back on bread, pasta, rice, potatoes. That along with Metformin cut me 20 lbs and my a1c went from 10.3 to 7.1.

Now I'm testing before and after meals and trying to figure out what else to cut to hopefully get that a1c to begin with a 6.

The cravings were maddening for months. Thankfully they're not as deep now. Humans weren't meant to consume a half pound of candy a day, go figure... only took having the bones in my foot weaken and brake to teach me that lesson. Oops!
