Thumbs up Saturday's Ten Miler race report

I went out and toed the starting line with 1,400+ people in the torrential downpour and flash flooding this past Saturday morning. Temperatures were in the high 40's. I had my unwaterproof (*sigh*) MM515 safely secured in a ziploc baggie inside a waist pouch.

So my fasting no. when I awakened from a restless night of anxiety, tossing & turning, etc. at 6 a.m. was 157 - argh! I was hoping for something around 110-120. I eyeballed my correction figure the pump suggested and decided on reducing it to a conservative 0.4 units of humalog. By 7:30 (race start was 7:45 a.m.) I checked and I had shot up to 187 from pre-race jitters. I was freaking out. So I did another 0.2 units of humalog - still in the conservative mode thinking of the exercise insulin sensitivity phenomenon...

The gun went off and we all took off - about half a mile into the race it went from a steady rain to a downpour. Water was flowing in streams across the road. We were like wet rats. I had stuck IV3000s to my feet to prevent blisters from the wet shoes. I put my head down and focused on the race and was lucky to have hubby, my parents and a few friends strewn about the course to support me. At mile 7, I was two minutes ahead of my goal! I was so excited. About the time however I noticed how fatigued I was getting from running in the wet shoes which felt like 100lb weights on the ends of my legs. I could feel the water sloshing in my toe box going down one hill... I lost quite a bit of momentum during miles 7-9 including the whole two minutes I had "banked". When I heard my split time at mile 9 I was terrified my goal was slipping away and I dug in and forced my slogging feet to pick up the pace. I crossed the finish line in precisely the time I was aiming for...8 minutes faster than the last two years' finishes. WOO HOOOOO!!! Oh, and my finish BG was 121.

Thanks to everyone for all the support and kind words. I remembered those during the tough times of the race and it helped to lift my spirits.

My next event is a half marathon near the beach Apr. 23. The good news is -NO HILLS! a completely flat course.
