Happy to listen! That's what we do here! Hi Tenaj1! Welcome to the forum. We all, at some level were (are recovering) sugarholics. Diabetes is one of the more 'merciful' diseases you can get as you are able to directly affect it with your own actions. There is so much you can do between new diet regimens (carb reduction), finding an exercise activity you really like (biking for me) and even using insulin to help control the blood sugar. You'll be surprised that in a few months you'll be well on the way to getting healthier. You do have to choose SOME method of committing to better health. Doing 'nothing' is NOT an option.

Did your Dr. ask you to get Diabetes education classes? They can be very helpful but this forum has been my main source of info. Start reading everything you can.

The Glyburide your Dr ordered will help get the numbers under control. But you can start by taking baby steps by thinking about trying to limit 'one carb' you love today. Like if you'd normally have potatoes with dinner tonight -- choose -- for just tonight to have let's say, broccoli, instead -- or 3 small squares of cheddar cheese. And take a 15 minute walk after dinner. As a new diabetic you will learn that it's not just the sugar in sodas, candy, etc.. that's the problem -- but also any food that turns into sugar in the bloodstream -- like all the starches and most grains: potatoes, pasta, breads, cereals, and even fruits (of course cakes, cookies, etc). If you prefer to live on very little oral medications and not take insulin thru a very short needle (that actually doesn't hurt at all in my experience) then you'll need to consider cutting back on the carb intake. And if you haven't already -- start getting active too.

Even those 'baby' steps I mention above will launch you in a good direction.

Dx 7/15/09 - A1c 10.6 ; 10/26/09 - A1c 7.2 ; 1/20/10 - A1c 5.7
Meds: Metformin XR 500mg-2/day, Lantus 18iu 8:30am, Diovan 80mg-1/day,
Nexium 40mg-2/day, D3 2000iu, B12 2500mcg; Diet: for now, low carb:<60g/day
Weight mngm't: 288 (7/15/09) | 260 (3/4/10) | back down a total of 28 lbs
Regained 6 lbs after too high a level of insulin. Dropped in half - still good numbers.
Exercise reg: 45 min at gym 3-4x/week - cardio + weights
