DAFNE stands for Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating. It's basically an diabetes management education program that teaches people to adjust insulin dose to fit lifestyle, rather than having to live around a rigid, predetermined insulin regime.

Going under the slogan “Like what you eat, eat what you like,” DAFNE involves five-day courses during which groups of about eight people work closely with diabetes specialist nurses, dieticians and doctors. They are taught how to calculate an insulin dose that will be right for them, on a particular day, given increased knowledge of:

- what their blood glucose levels are and how they react to insulin,
- how much carbohydrate is contained in food they want to eat – an exercise that involves learning how to interpret packaging and food labels, and
- the impact of activity or exercise.
