He is apparently the exception to the rule! Just as with most things, that may work for him. Or, he could very well have turned out like Waylon Jennings. He lost a foot and ultimately died from complications of diabetes. I know of a writer and survival school operator in Texas who, as a result of uncontrolled diabetes, died after a horse stepped on his foot and it got infected. All of those are extreme but real cases. Fortunately, or unfortunately, most of us fall someplace in the middle.
