Although I was originally told night-time, you can take it anytime it's convenient for you as long as it's 'approximately' the same time. I remember I experimented with my timing quite a bit after I recognized my individual Lantus action profile (I do get a bit of a peak over the first 12 hrs and it starts running out at ~20 hrs).
