I never took Lantus...but when I was on NPH or the 70/30 split I tried to take my insulin about the same time everyday (did I always succeed...NO but I tried). I even got up on the weekends to take the shot and eat....yuck....As for what to do when your out......take it with you. Find a way that you can take it with you. Here are several ideas..

Does it come in a pen?

carry just the syringe and the vial

prefill a syringe and put it somewhere that the plunger won't get pushed..I use to put mine in the fold of my checkbook.
