How many carbs?

How many carbs is a diabetic supposed to have in a day?
What if I've not had a meeting with a dietician yet and am interested in watching what I eat? How should I go about it?
Thanks!

avoid rice, pasta, potatoes, breads, etc the white foods... cauliflower is the exception.

I average 30-50 grams of carbs per meal, but what may work for me, may not work for you. "Your Mileage May Vary"

Take it in stride and relax. try to see a dietitian as soon as you can

I think it really depends on the person. I try to limit my main meals to 40 or less. With snacks, I have under 200 in a day.

But that is just me - my BG stays in control with this diet but yours may not.

Eat and test, test, test.

As Mortis said, be aware of the foods that are likely to cause spikes such as potatoes, pasta, bread, etc.

you did not mention weather youy were type one or two. I am type one so I use insulin, I also run about 5 miles a day, and on days I run, I eat anywhere from 400 to 500 grams of carbs per day. I am not over weight or have problems with my blood sugar. Carbs are our main source of energy for our bodies. Obviously, talk to your dietician first, but with regular exercise, I don't see why anyone would have to restrict their carbs too drasticlly as long as they are watching their total caloric intake.
