| | | Well I dont know about oatmeal much, I get mine in packets and it seems to vary alot by brand and of course serving size. As for bananas its all about size. I think that for me anyhow the size of my fore-arm can be a 30-35 carb banana and half that would be 15-20 you could use a book and measure by weight untill you feel comfortable. | | | In the case of the banana it would be determined by the size of the banana

| | | I though the variety and ripeness had a lot to do with the carb count. Obviously, a bigger piece o banana would have more.
I suggest than no diabetic ever eat oatmeal from a package. The instant stuff is like eating sugar, and I am not talking sweetness

| | Hmm variety and ripeness might have an effect but if they do I cant find it. REally? some of the oatmeals I eat are actually pretty good, seems to me its better then ice-cream a whole bowl can be 15-30 carbs from those I eat depending on type. milk adds protein and it has fiber so seems fine to me, mabey its just me though and Im type 1 so I can eat all I want as long as I bolus for it that is

| | | Wait take that back, just went and checked, that stuff is nearly if not as bad as those super-sugary cereals! Lucky charms, fruity pebbles, whever they are all called. My apologies.

| | | My oatmeal has the carbs & fiber on the side of the can or box. I actually measure as per the container and use their numbers.

| | | We favor steel cut oats for 1 reason, while the flavor may be better, the reason we like it is the decrease glycemic impact it has on us, it is slower burning, means you can take less insulin to cover it. Rolled oats is absorbed much quicker and the instant packs are pulverized oats. It is the same reason enriched flour is not the same as whole grain.
The better you eat, the less negative impact on your body, the less likely you'll be negatively affected which means a healthier life.
Most cereals are the same problem, even the brand that says made with whole grains, problem is it is not all whole grain and once they process it, it is useless to help us.
As a type 2, I can forgo medication of any sort and maintain good blood sugar. You don't have that option, but would it not be worth it if you could reduce your needs.

| | | For 1/4 c uncooked McCann's steeel cut oats, it's 26 g carb according to the can. My hubby makes 1 c according to Alton Brown's recipe (toasted in 1 T butter before adding water) and finishes up with 3/4 c whole milk or whatever we have, which I figure in.
I eat 1/3 of what he makes for Sunday morning home breakfasts. We call the milk carbs at 9. All together, 43 g of carbs, I eat it with splenda and canola oil margerine. It costs me about 5 units of Novolog.
Sooo good. The highest carb thing I eat all week. I consider it worth it for the LDL lowering factor and taste.
