| | | I'm a type one so I just bolus for it...but a local health food store would definitely have some healthier options. I think there is a soy ice cream out there which would have much less carbs. Look for the carbs on the label, and take fat into consideration as that will slow absorption into your system. I think if I was a type 2, I'd occasionally go out and have some treats and then like run it off after I eat and have no problems. Seems logical enough.

| | in australia we have a brand called "No Sugar Added" which is pretty low carb.
it only comes in vanilla though. i eat it with a spoonful of real sara lee chocolate ice cream. when i am done the cat licks the bowl.
i am sure in the USA there are many brands and many flavors of "No Sugar Added" ice creams.
ice cream is my one treat these days.

| | | I'm an ice cream fan myself. You can have it, you just have to watch your serving size and the # of carbs that it has. Sometimes the s/f varieties have more carbs than the regular ones do, so its good to check first.
I like the s/f popsicles and fudgsicles. I also enjoy the Breyer's Carb Smart ice cream as well.
I sometimes will have a scoop of regular ice cream, but its usually on the weekends when i'm more active.
The best way to find your individual tolerances to ice cream (or anything else for that matter) is to have a small serving and test 2hrs after your first bite. If you blood sugar is high (over 140), you'll know that this is something you need to avoid or have in smaller portions.

| | | I find that sugar free/no sugar added ice cream raises my BG faster than the real stuff. I have never followed the rule (which many low carbers do) of subtracting sugar alcohols to get net carbds. Even subtracting 1/2 doesn't work for me. I count them all as regular carbs and bolus.
For a Type 2, ice cream with the highest fat content is probably best because all that fat will slow down the carbs. Might not help your waistline or heart, but it's kinder on your BG.

| | | Newer buy the low fat kind. the no sugar added is the way to go, just make sure that doesn't mean corn syrup instead.
I find a small scoop of decadent ice cream is more satisfying than more of a substitute. The no sugar added is in part as to cut down on my sweetness tolerence.
Breyers and Edy's seem most common in my area. I like the triple chocolate the best.

| | | Now this is something I can never really understand. You can make great ice cream that is actually pretty darn low carb. The problem? It has fat in it. Your best solution is to get your own ice cream maker. Buy fully heavy cream and use it as the basis for your ice cream. Use artificial sweeteners, splenda or stevia.
There are no sugar added versions of ice cream on the market, like BlueBunny. They are about 15-20 g net carbs per 1/2 cup serving. But remember, almost all of these reduced/no sugar added products are from companies that are totally fat paranoid, and hence they have made compromises in taste and carb counts in order to keep the fat content low.
My suggestion, blow off all the store made, make yourself real home made ice cream, use real heavy cream and enjoy yourself.

Spoil yourself every now and then. Just watch the serving size.

| | | Frozen Yogurts seem to have a lot less carbs as well and most are fat free. I admit, not as good as real ice cream, but most of the time it does the trick when I'm really missing it!
