Burgers

Is it typical to see BG's rise over time after eating a hamburger? I notice my BG levels increase significantly a few hours after eating this food. Any comments are helpful. Thanks.

Paul,

Are you eating a bun or fries with that?

I bet its the bread. I grill burgers and eat them plain often and no significant rise to BG.

i haven't had this problem.. although, my insulin to carb ratio changes with each fast-food restaurant... for example, I give myself more insulin for a jack-in-the-box burger meal while i give myself less with burger king: it all just depends on what type of bun you're ordering and what kind of fries... those curly fries from jack-in-the-box are heavenly but I have to bolus more insulin to eat them or i spike. hope this helps a bit! =)

I make my home made burger (should I call it sandwitch ? )
with grilled chicken breast and peperridge farm's multigrain bread. Its 10-15 gram carbs in total. I also use light mayonase, lettuce, pickles and lots of jalopeno pepers.

And..................... it tastes very good. However, I only recommend this bread if you are going to eat it as soon as you prepare. Not if you plan to take it out for lunch or a picnic. It can get messy

What kind of pepperridge farms bread has that few carbs? Almost every bread I can find has 10-15g PER SLICE

I generally have this problem with burgers. The bread gives you the immediate rise in your blood sugar and then the fat in the meat drives my blood sugar back up in about two hours. If you added fries to the mix, it is a recipe for disaster. LOL.

Anytime you have a large fat content in foods, remember to test two hours later and do a correction. If on a pump, try the dual wave bolus.

I really don't think it is the fat causing your blood sugar to rise. I suspect that eating the fat and protein in combination with a serious jolt of carbs causes a delayed absorption, thus the blood sugar response happens over a longer period of time.

If you have no carbs in your large fat meal, you should not need to have a dual wave bolus. I personally drop the bun and fries.

There are several breads and some hamburger buns that are low carb. My favorite is Arnold's whole wheat low carb...I think a total of 15 carbs for 2 slices, Sara Lee, Aunt Millie and Pepperidge Farm have low carb bread too. I hate that they cost so much There are some that fall apart as soon as you put anything on them, but I solved this by adding big pieces of lettuce, then adding the "wet" stuff and it hold together long enough to eat it. Actually I get a store brand whole wheat bun from Kroger that tastes pretty good and has 15 carbs.....if they have it, I am sure other stores would.

I eat Sara Lee '45 calories and delightful' either in multi-grain or whole wheat. Net carbs for two slices is 14 for multi-grain.

For breakfast, I have two slices with peanut butter and an apple or peach and usually top out around 120-125 (I check both 1 hour and two hour numbers).

I'd have to think that a hamburger on the same bread would get me to similar numbers. And yes, a regular hamburger bun will top me out at 170-180.

Some stores, like Whole Foods, also sell 'Lifestyles', it's a diabetic bread. The downer is that you have to keep it refrigerated.
