Unsweetend Yogurt

I've been a yogurt eater for years, but just in the past few weeks I've tried unsweetended yogurt. I remember having it as a kid which left me with a bad taste for it. But I find the stuff I'm ow buying very very good!

However, there's no carb info on the containers. It's made by a local farm and sold through my organic butcher. I'm not complaining. I treat it as the same as milk. Does that sound reasonable? Can someone tell me how much carbs their local brands contain?

John --

I think that the cultures in the yogurt negate the effect of some of the sugar carbs from the milk. When I used to low carb diet, people swore this was the case. Now with me being such an obsessive glucose checker, I find that no-sugar-added yogurt has virtually NO effect on my blood sugar.

Enjoy,
Jill

Jill,
I have been eating the greek zero fat plain yogurt from Trader Joes and find little bg effect unless I load it with berries.

I usually put a tablespoon of dark cocoa powder and 2 splendas in a cup of yogurt in it for a little variety.

The plain yogurt I eat has 12 carbs per cup and it has less of an effect than milk by far. I add berries and splenda and only bolus for the 12 carbs.

Just about 2wks ago, I tried non-fat Greek yogurt, Chobani brand. I love it!!! It has a lot more protein than the yogurt I had been eating. I get the vanilla version and put some artificial sweetener in it and it's so good. Last night, I stirred in some cocoa powder and it tasted like German chocolate! That's for breakfast this morning for sure. Thank you for the tip!!!

I guess - to at least some extent - it depends on the percentage of fat in the milk it was made from: higher percentage of fat = lower proportion of lactose = lower carbs per volume. I expect that the bacteria eat some of the lactose as well.

The Bernstein book suggests using a urine glucose dip-stick to check for sugar in restaurant sauces - you need to mix a small amount with your saliva and then put it on the test strip - not sure of this would give you a quantitative measure though.

I always have Trader Joe's 0% Greek yogurt in the fridge. I also add cocoa to it often but I prefer Equal with mine. I also add some vanilla extract. Adding cocoa & strawberries makes for a very decadent tasting treat.

I also use it plain as a substitute for sour cream.

You might want to check out CalorieKing - Calorie Counter and type in "yogurt" for the search term, then choose your brand. Many brands and types are listed. Just be sure to compare the serving sizes. Some are smaller than others.
