| | | Breakfasts? So I'm trying to go lower carb (not really low carb, but working on it!) and breakfasts are my biggest issue, at least on work days. I can't eat right after getting up, because it makes me sick. Been that way my whole life. So I get to school and teach a class, and have 2nd period (8:18-9) to eat.
The other problem is that my resistance in the morning is ludicrous. Even 20g of carbs, properly bolused -- and sometimes over-bolused -- can send me over 200.
So any ideas on what to eat? I have no means of cooking besides a microwave. I've been eating nuts and cheese, but that's going to get REAL boring REAL fast and I'll wind up going back to bagels There's really nothing available from the school caf (besides bagels and pop-tarts!) so I need to be able to bring something to eat out of the fridge, or able to be microwaved. I'm SO lost.

| | | The South Beach High-Protein cereal bars are quite good. Each bar is 140 calories, 5 gms fat, 15 carbs, 3 fiber.
I also enjoy the EAS AdvantEdge Carb Control Shake
110 cal, 6 carbs 4 fiber. Doesn't require refrigeration, comes in chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, mocha, and dark chocolate. You can get these at Walmart.
I'm a bacon/egg person generally, but when I'm sick of this, i'll usually have one of the above to break the monotony.

| | Tell us more about the kinds of foods you like to eat!
Here's one suggestion: prepare a breakfast burrito in advance. I can't do regular flour tortillas - very spiky for me. So I use low carb wraps. Just heat some refried beans (I use non-fat cause the regular beans are 50% lard ) scramble some eggs and add shredded cheddar, salsa and whatever else you like. wrap it up and toss them in the fridge. I can eat them hot or cold and I know they travel well, I have hiked with them in a backpack for four days. If spicy foods are not a problem for you then slice up some fresh jalapeno or habanero peppers. If you like less spicy try some fresh poblano peppers.

| | | I have homemade muesli (total including milk is 18g of carbs), while this isn't suitable for everyone it seems to work reasonably well for me. Bernstein recommends having omelettes/eggs/beacon (protein) for breakfast however I always want something simple in the morning as I am not a morning person. |

| | | this is something wierd for you. I cannot eat oatmeal, toast, any cereals, milk, none of that stuff for breakfast. wait a minute i have to go get the product, be right back... for WHATEVER mystery reason, I can eat Hodgson mill multigrain with flaxseed and soy hot cereal with 25 carbs in a serving. ingredients oats, unprocessed wheat bran, mill flaxseed, soy grits, untoasted wheat germ, cracked whole wheat. I don't use milk, I use almond milk, plain unsweetened. i don't add any fruit or sweetener. it is not to bad. I spike at about an hour, about 15 pts, then I am usually lower than I was to start with
at 2 hrs. I do not know why this happens to work. no idea.
pretty strange.

Last week was churiso, potato, and egg. The current batch is an off brand of spicy Cajun Bacon chunks yes chunks, not strips, small spiced potato cubes, and a little bit of eggs, in a flower wrap. No idea of the nutrition content, but they are OOOhhhh so good and don't mess with me. |

| | I guess I'm fortunate that I can eat small amounts of carb at breakfast, as long as it's no more than about 25 carbs.
Even so, my breakfasts are generally Carb Master yogurt (3 net carbs, available at Kroger, Food 4 Less or Ralphs), eggs 800 different ways, low carb bagel (Western Bagel makes one called "net 10" it has ten net carbs since it's very high in fiber) and/or a slice of Orowheat "light" wheat which has something like 4 net carbs after you deduct the fiber.
Some folks find that they do well with left over roast beef, chicken or sausage from the previous night's dinner. There's no hard and fast rule that you HAVE to eat so-called "breakfast food" at breakfast!
There is also a really terrific protein bar that I buy - they can be used for a snack or meal replacement - called "Oh Yeah Protein Wafer". Only 6 carbs a serving and they taste wonderful. You can find them here: ISS Oh Yeah Protein Wafer Bars if you want to buy them by the box (I do - usually two boxes per order. They keep well) or here: Search Results : LoCarbU.com if you just want to try a couple out first.

| | | My breakfasts lately consist of a sliced fruit, apple, grapes, or banana, douced in plain 6% yogurt. This 25-30 g works much better than toast.
Also try pre-bolusing if u can. |

| | | I am not a big breakfast eater. I also find that, for me, under 10 carbs works best. I generally have either a Premier Nutrition protein shake (available in chocolate or a protein shake made with Trader Joe's Designer Whey protein powder, which I mix with almond milk. (Because the Designer Whey only provides 18 grams of protein, I often use two scoops, instead of one.)
Atkins also makes a line of low-carb (3-6 grams of carbs, including fiber) drinks that I buy on occasion. I prefer the Premier Nutrition, which has less sunflower/safflower oil, so as to try to keep my ratio of omega-3s to omega-6s better in line.
Both the Premier Nutrition and the Atkins shakes travel well. I keep a bunch in my office.

| | I am visiting my wife's family this week, and they don't eat until 10 or 11 AM! It's driving me crazy. They want to accommodate me, but I don't want to put them out of their way either. I just bit the bullet most of the week. Then 3 days ago, we had venison chili that we brought along. Everyone was afraid of it I guess, and there is a lot left. I've had it for breakfast by myself the past 2 days. Fill a bowl and microwave it for a couple minutes. Yummy! Very low carb, and venison is also low fat.

| | | Ideas Hi...
I usually eat breakfast before I go to school, but I have had to eat during my prep period at 9:00 a.m.
Some of the things that work for me:
yogurt
half of a peanut butter sandwich
cheese and apples
egg/sausage breakfast burritos
leftover steak or roast
I can't really stand eating a lot of non-breakfast foods in the morning, so salad isn't on my list. But, sliced tomatoes are o.k.
Usually, anything you eat at other times of the day will work for your breakfast.

| | | Amanda, my breakfast regime has made a signicant difference (especially since I used to eat a PACKET of crumpets with my breakfast before DX.)
Once a week I cook up a heap of beans in a pressure cooker, divide them up into meal size serves and freeze them.
Heat up in the microwave each morning add Chilli, levels are so good there is usually enough leeway to have a slice of Burgen toast with my cup of tea.
In your situation you could easily take the frozen beans to work, they would thaw out in time to eat later.
Works for me but I am a Chilli freak, definitely sets up the palate for the rest of the day. |

| | | Things that work for me and which are portable:
Low fat plain yogurt with (or without) a little bit of fruit, maybe with some cinnamon;
Boiled eggs;
Small apple, pear, similar fruit;
Slice of low-glycemic bread (Alvarado Bakery Lifestyles bread).
Maybe some of these items will be helpful for you.

| | | Eat lunch or dinner for breakfast Try dishes you can cook the night/day/weekend before and heat up in the microwave.
Stews, chicken soup and other soups, coq au vin, baked chicken, baked beans, curry, meatloaf, grilled fish, roast veggies, and the list goes on. Salads don't need heating up.
As you can see, my stomach makes no difference between breakfast, lunch and dinner. Although I can tolerate whole wheat cereal and soy milk and I often eat a bowl with fruits for breakfast, I also eat lunch and dinner dishes for breakfast. My favorite? Any soft cheese mixed with herbs and capers wrapped in smoked salmon! |

| | | GeishaGirl,
I don't really eat breakfast, never have, but using the microwave you could prepare things like:
- Bacon (for what I think you guys call Canadian Bacon, I allow about 1.5 minutes per strip)
- Scrambled Egg (cook in a mug, mix well, heat for 20 secs, stir, heat for 20 secs, stir, repeat until cooked)
- Frankfurters (I cook 2 small frankfurters for 1 min 20 secs at 50% power)
I can tolerate small flour tortilla, just as well as low carb ones are hard to get here. But you could wrap the bacon/frankfurter in a tortilla. I have also done sliced cheddar cheese with slice ham, wrapped in tortilla and zapped for about 30-40 seconds (until cheese melts).
Now I'm getting peckish and trying to work out why the heck I don't do some of the above for myself in the office !
