Cheat or Treat - what to you call it

I'm just wondering, when and if you get a craving for something and have been doing very well on what you eat and decide to have something be it some carbs, candy, dark chocolate etc, do you consider this as a cheating or having a treat?

Personally I call it a treat, for me it is a more positive approach. I'm saying I have earned the reward. To me cheating is negative, you are gaining something you have not earned.

I have a daily (mon-fri) treat, it's simple, it's a skinny latte. I look forward to it and find it to be fairly BG neutral, but I laid off coffee to keep BP in check and so I do see this as a treat.

At the weekends, if things went well during the week, I sometimes reward myself with a couple of squares of dark chocolate or some tortilla chips. I don't always do this, only if I feel the desire for that little bonus.

What do others do?

Some stress is optional, so why opt for it?

I eat right nearly all the time. When I choose to diverge from the path I don't sweat it at all. What would be the point of getting all negative about it - that just makes it worse and it adds no flavor.

By the way, dark chocolate is more of a food group than a treat

I treat myself to a cookie once or twice a week....any more than that and it is cheating.

It is simply neither. It is food. But something you enjoy eating. If it helps you to punish yourself to eat it, then go ahead. If not just enjoy it. You already know how to minimize the effect so eat it without guilt. The only suggestion I really have is to savor it. Making it an event will extend the satisfaction. Popping a box into your mouth while watching a movie gives you the same BG but deprives the pleasure

Let your BS meter tell you. If the treat spikes you BS past your "Max spike limit" its a cheat. Thats the way I define it.

It also has a highly medicinal value.

I've been treating myself to a small delicious glass of wine, maybe once a week. And it really helps all my other cravings.

I too call it a treat, unless I get carried away (we all know the difference) and then it's cheating. I treat myself at least every other day though; dark chocolate, or low sugar home-made cheesecake, a few tortilla chips and salsa, stuff like that. Things that don't make me spike and I only eat these if my bg has been within acceptalbe limits for the day. I agree with above - it's food, it's eating, it's how I live my life and how I stay in control.

Treat! As long as I eat within the limits I've set. In my case, it's chocolates. I love chocolates in whatever form, shape or size, provided it is not diluted in milk or covered in sugar or caramel. Since I now consider it a treat and have committed myself to eating only a set quantity, I go for the expensive ones (the expense ensures that I do limit my intake).

Technically, I don't cheat since I did not declare them off-limits food!

I would call it a treat Dave , But it's ten times better if you have been good at exercising or your diet.

Would you like some David??

I made this just last Sunday - and put it in 5 ramekin containers to limit portion size, however, these were pretty big portions. You could easily use an 8" springform pan as well, I often do. One other thing, I did use a sugar substitute, yes, I know it's not much better for you, but it does not spike me, so I treated myself!

Mix:
2 8oz containers softened (room temp) cream cheese
2/3 Cup Xylitol - can be substituted with Splenda
(Xylitol uses sugar alcohols and has a glycemic index of 7)

Blend with a hand mixture until nice and creamy, approximately 2 minutes.
Add: 1 Cup Sour Cream - Mix
1 jumbo sized or 2 reg. sized Eggs - Mix
The zest of 1 Lemon - Mix

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Crust: Anna's Ginger Thins crushed - (3.5 oz - about 55 carbs for the whole crust!) and 2-3 Tablesspoons melted butter - mix

Pat the thin crust in the Ramekins or 8" Springform pan. Add the cheesecake mixture and bake at 350 degrees for about 40 minutes in the Ramekins or about 60-70 minutes in the Springform pan. The center should be slightly jiggly and will set up after a few hours.

That's it! No raise at all in BG 1, 2, 3, or 4 hours after I ate this. After that I went to bed. Enjoy!

Wow, thanks Jill that sounds like a neat treat!

Since DX I have found that I can tolerate a small piece of cheesecake it has a Digestive Biscuit (like graham crackers) base, the crush digestive biscuits are bound using melted butter, but not cooked. The cheese cake filling is normally two tubs of philadelphia cream cheese, lemon zest/juice and a small pack of sugar free jello disolved in warm water. Put base into springform pan and press down using flat bottomed glass, spoon mixture over base and allow to set in fridge.

I find I get on pretty good with that treat too.
