There actually is a "Diabetes for Dummies" book...and another good book is "The First Year, Type 2 Diabetes," by Gretchen Becker.

The best way to learn what/how to eat is to "eat by your meter." What I mean is that you try your particular food then test 2 hrs after the first bite. If you are 140 or less, you'll know that's a food that has little effect on your blood sugar...more than 140 means you should eat that food less often.

Everyone differs in their tolerances, so testing is the only way you'll know what works for you.

As for sugar, cake and candy....it's best to do without these as much as possible...find something sugar-free (like s/f jello, pudding or popsicles) that will help your craving and not raise your blood sugar.

I agree with princesslinda. Living by "absolutely not" and "never at all" is simply too inflexible and punishing. Your body and its function are different from everyone else's and only you can know what works for you.

Sugary foods are for celebrations. Celebrate when it's time to celebrate. Have that birthday cake! Don't celebrate because you feel like it.

I found the book Blood Sugar 101: What They Don't Tell You About Diabetes by Jenny Ruhl very informative and helpful. It's not about what to eat or not to eat, but about testing and what numbers you may want to set for yourself.
