1st Time Posting

I have been a Type 2 diabetic for about 3 years. Let me rephrase that - I have been a "noncompliant" Type 2 diabetic for about 3 years. Up until my last set of bloodtests, my sugar was in the 145-180 range and my A1C was about 7.2. At my last set of blood tests (2 months ago), everything went into orbit. My sugar tested at 238 and my A1C bounced up to 7.8. BTW, before my last bloodtest, I was just on 1000Mg of Metforman 2X a day. After this last bloodtest, my doctor added Glimperide once a day.

Being scared that I wouldn't make it intact to my next birthday, I decided to take some steps. Simplistically, I thought that if I have too much sugar in my blood, reducing my carb intake should help. For the last 2 months, I have reduced my carbs as much as possible, i.e., no breads, sweets, pastas - you know, all the good stuff. The results have been pretty positive. I have lost about 20 pounds and my sugar has dropped from 238 down to about 110 in the morning and 95 went I come home from work. My sugar has been at these levels for about a month.

My next set of bloodtests is scheduled for the end of this month. Hopefully, my A1C will drop and my sugar level should be about where it is now.

Good for you, Actuary! If you have not read here, a lot of us are low-carbers ... any questions or help needed? Welcome to the forums, and glad to hear your story!

Congratulations, Actuary! Great job in taking control. It may seem simplistic, but many of us see the same results by drastically reducing carbs. Make you wonder why it isn't standard advice.

I actually thought that the replies I would get would say that I was doing something wrong. I am glad that you both are having the same experience that I am having. I will look around the forums to see what additional info I get can about this "simplistic" approach. Thanks for the support.

I did the same thing when diagnosed--cut out candy completely and drastically scaled back on bread, pasta, rice, potatoes. That along with Metformin cut me 20 lbs and my a1c went from 10.3 to 7.1.

Now I'm testing before and after meals and trying to figure out what else to cut to hopefully get that a1c to begin with a 6.

The cravings were maddening for months. Thankfully they're not as deep now. Humans weren't meant to consume a half pound of candy a day, go figure... only took having the bones in my foot weaken and brake to teach me that lesson. Oops!
