You do seem to be uncomfortable with adjusting your insulin on your own, so I'd definitely talk to your doctor. Insulin needs do go up dramatically in the first trimester of pregnancy, but then usually go back to normal in the 2nd.
I'd highly recommend getting off of your "average" dosing for meals. You need to count carbs and use a ratio in order to dose for meals. Your doctor can help you with that too!
There are some others here who can tell you about some books you can read... I don't remember them off the top of my head now.
Another thing, your OB will want your fasting numbers under 95 and 2hour post meal under 120. So they'll be adjusting your insulin a lot.
