gd mom ...will child develop diabetes later on

Hi,

I had gestational diabetes during my pregnancy. My child is healhty and fine so far. Sometimes I do worry a bit if they will get diabetes later on life or during their teenager years. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Yisi

It appears that children that are born to parents with gestational diabetes are a little more at risk, but no more than any other child that has diabetes in their family.

I have type one diabetes and I was worried about my daughter's children since they were BIG babies. My daughter probably had undiagnosed GD as her second baby was born with low blood sugar. The nurse explained that the baby is used to the higher blood sugar and the baby's pancreas is working overtime to keep their blood sugar in check. When the cord is cut, the baby's blood sugar plummets for awhile until it stops over producing insulin.

I asked the doctors and the nurses if this made my daughter's children more prone to diabetes and they said no. No more than any other familial pre-disposition.
