Being induced at 38 wks, ur thoughts?

Hi I've always wanted a full term pregnancy let the baby com wen its ready. But my Ob wants me tob induced at 38 wks due to me avin diabetes and risk of still born after these weeks. But surely if I'm doing fine and baby is fine y can't I go full term. It is early days for me I'm only 8 wks pregnant and I kno a lot can happen between now and then and if baby comes to any risk then ill let them intervene, but I'm hoping for a normal healthy pregnancy. Wat r ur thoughts and experiences on this?

If you're only 8 weeks now I wouldn't sweat it (yet). That's quite a ways away and it's not worth worrying about at this point. 37 weeks is considered full term anyway. When I was pregnant that topic wasn't even brought up until two weeks before my due date. My due date was Sept. 17 and I was induced on the night of the 12th and had my daughter at 2pm on the 13th. I was already 2cm dilated. Who knows, you could have the baby on your own at or before the 38 week mark. I understand that the doctors are concerned about diabtes-related risks/complications in the pregnancy going beyond the due date and they want to reduce the chance of that happening.

There are so many factors involved. Going early is SOP.

A "normal healthy" pregnancy is something you theoretically cannot have as a type 1 diabetic; though I'm sure some of the moms will argue this point. Your babies tend to be abnormally large and difficult. Your own body can be extra-stressed.

I have no children of my own...yet but once I am ready to get prego I agree with you, if you are healthy and doing what you are supposed to and are in great control of your blood glucose levels I dont see why you wouldnt be able to have the baby full term....how is your control? Do you take care of yourself and keep good control on your numbers? If so, then I would tell my doc I want to go full term unless there is some sort of problem that it needs to be sooner.

Yea hi, my last hba1c was 6.6 which is great and docs r happy wiv my control. I've read storys online which r quite frightening to read about not letting mums wait for natural birth. And I've always pictured my pregnancy to b as normal as poss I control my diabetes not the otha way round. Well done to u for planning a family, u can't wait and Iam soo exicited. R u activitly tryin now? And wat is ur hba1c?

I have two little ones, 23 months and almost 10 months and they were born at 37.5 and 38.5 weeks. My first was induced and then that ended in a c-section because my little girl had turned over and wouldn't descend. My second was a scheduled c-section because they were born so close together. I was very healthy for my entire pregnancy (keeping my A1C in the low 5's). My doctors were very pleased, but the practice was to induce at 38 weeks for Type I's no matter what. You have some time before any of these decisions have to be made and there will be lots of tests in between to enlighten you a bit more about how your little one is doing. My doctor said that I was in excellent control and was happy to try to wait for me to go into labor naturally, but would not let me go beyond 39 weeks. I am fine with this. I am super healthy and have two healthy babies, but being Type I makes pregnancy different and everyone's bodies deal with pregnancy uniquely. The risks associated with full term pregnancy have to do with placental degradation. (This means that the placenta starts to degrade, the way it does in non-type I's post 40 weeks.) This is not the case for every Type I, but is the risk that the doctors try to prevent. For me, I was so strict during my pregnancies and knew that I created as non-diabetic of an environment as I could, but my body is still Type I. This is a decision you need to make with your doctors. I had a high risk ob and would also stay in touch with an endo, sending my numbers. As you move through your pregnancy, you will learn much more about yourself and your own comfort. There are so many decisions to made throughout and then there is so much we have no control over. As a Type I, there may be certain things that you need to prepare to battle for. For me, it was about choosing what was most important. My big battle was over wearing my pump in the hospital. I won this battle and my endo was behind me. You will find what is important to you, but I would try to focus on your current place in the pregnancy, because there will be a lot with each stage.

Congratulations and good luck to you.
